The masonry Classical Revival courthouse was erected in 1937.  It is on a square at Main Street, Highland Avenue, Baltimore Street, and Liberty Avenue.  United States Highway 45 is Highland Avenue in the town.  The courthouse was designed by Joseph Holman & Thomas Marr.  A Judicial Complex was added in 1998.  The courthouse grounds feature veterans’ memorials.  There was a classier 1907 courthouse earlier in Jackson, the only county seat.  Madison County was formed on November 7, 1821 as the 52nd county.  It is named for United States President James Madison.  The county seat was named for War of 1812 General Andrew Jackson.  He is also the namesake of Jackson County. 

Madison County government consists of a sheriff, a County Mayor, and 25 Commissioners.  Three Circuit Court Judges, One Chancery Court Judge, Two General Court Judges, and One Juvenile Court Judge serve Madison, Chester, and Henderson counties.  The county is in the western part of the state.  Memphis, Tennessee is southwest and Nashville, Tennessee is northeast of the county.  The county center is in Jackson 4 miles Northwest of the city center.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Gibson, Carroll, Henderson, Chester, Hardeman, Haywood, and Crockett counties. 

The area of the county is 559 square miles.  It is 26 out of 95 in the state.  It ranks 14 out of 95 in population in the state.  It has a density of 175.84 persons per square mile making it 18 out of 95 in the state.  Madison County has 68.3% of its population in its incorporated areas.  Interstate Highway 40 crosses through the county from northeast to southwest from Henderson County to Haywood County.  United States Highway 45 originates and heads south into Chester County.  United States Highway 45 East enters from Gibson County and terminates.  United States Highway 45 West comes in from the northwest, Crockett County, and terminates.  United States Highway 412 passes east to west from Henderson County to Crockett County.  The county resembles a two-headed arrow pointing northeast-southwest.  Jackson is located near the center of the county.  Jackson is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 66.3% of the county population.  This county is in the Jackson Metropolitan Statistical Area.
