The 1929 tan brick and masonry Classical Revival structure is located on a square at 1st Avenue, Commerce Street, 2nd Avenue, and Church Street. United States Highway 431 Business passes in front of the courthouse as Commerce Street. Hart, Freeland, and Roberts were the architects. The courthouse features a working clock with faux columns. The grounds have veterans’ memorials and a gazebo. The courthouse was renovated in 1974 and 1998. An Annex has been added with the purchase and remodeling of a former bank building in 1998. There was an 1874 courthouse previously in Lewisburg, the only county seat. The county was founded on February 20, 1836 from parts of Bedford, Lincoln, Maury, and Giles counties as the 69th county. It was named for United States Supreme Court Justice John Marshall. Lewisburg is named for explorer Meriwether Lewis. He is also the namesake for Lewis County.

Nashville, Tennessee is north and Chattanooga, Tennessee is southeast of the county. The county center is in Lewisburg 2.6 miles North of the city center. The county is surrounded clockwise by Rutherford, Bedford, Lincoln, Giles, Maury, and Williamson counties.
The area of the county is 375 square miles. It is 61 out of 95 in the state. It ranks 44 out of 95 in population in the state. It has a density of 91.5 persons per square mile making it 37 out of 95 in the state. Marshall County has 44.9% of its population in its incorporated areas. Interstate Highway 65 cuts the western part of the county from north to south from Maury County to Giles County. United States Highway 31 Alternate enters from Williamson County, north, and exits into Giles County, southwest. United States Highway 431 comes from the northwest, Maury County, and goes to the southeast, Lincoln County. The county looks like an upside down light bulb. Lewisburg is located in the southern third of the county. Lewisburg is the county seat and the largest city. It is 35.8% of the county population. This county is in the Lewisburg Micropolitan Statistical Area.
