The domed Classical Revival structure was constructed in 1905.  The courthouse is on a square at the intersection of 7th and Main streets.  United States Highway 31 passes three blocks to the west of the facility.  John E. R. Carpenter provided the building designs.  The courthouse features a working clock tower.  Maury County was established on December 7, 1807 from Williamson County as the 33rd county.  The courthouse was renovated in 1973.  Columbia has always been the county seat.  The county was named for State Senator Abram Poindexter Maury.  The county seat is presumably named for explorer Christopher Columbus. 

Maury County government consists of a sheriff, a County Mayor, and 22 Commissioners.  Four Circuit Court Judges, Two General Court Judges, and One Juvenile Court Judge serve Maury, Giles, Lawrence, and Wayne counties.  Maury County is located in southern Tennessee.  Nashville, Tennessee is north and Chattanooga, Tennessee is southeast of the county.  The county center is in Columbia 3 miles West of Columbia.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Williamson, Marshall, Giles, Lawrence, Lewis, and Hickman counties. 

The area of the county is 613 square miles.  It is 11 out of 95 in the state.  It ranks 14 out of 95 in population in the state.  It has a density of 164.7 persons per square mile making it 22 out of 95 in the state.  Maury County has 63.0% of its population in its incorporated areas.  Interstate Highway 65 crosses the eastern part of the county from north to south from Williamson County to Marshall County.  United States Highway 31 parallels Interstate Highway 65 from Williamson to Marshall counties.  United States Highway 43 originates and heads southwest into Lawrence County.  United States Highway 412 originates and goes west into Lewis County.  United States Highway 431 clips the northeast corner from Williamson County, north, to Marshall County, southeast.  Maury County is shaped like a bag of leaves.  Columbia is located slightly east of center in the county.  Columbia is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 41.3% of the county population.  The county is pronounced MA-REE.  This county is in the Columbia Micropolitan Statistical Area.
