The outstanding red brick Second Empire courthouse was built in 1879 and restored in 1999.  A Modern court building built in 2002 augments the courthouse.  They are sited on Millenium Plaza at 3rd and Commerce streets.  United States Highway 79 is two blocks to the north.  G. W. Bunting and C. G. Rosenplanter provided the designs.  There were 1796, 1811, and 1843 courthouses earlier in Clarksville, the only county seat.  The courthouse features a working clock tower and corner towers.  A liberty bell is on the grounds and Lady Justice sits on the roof top.  The county was formed on April 9, 18796 as the 13th county.  It was named for settler John Montgomery.  Clarksville is named for Revolutionary War General George Rogers Clark. 

Montgomery County government consists of a sheriff, a County Mayor, and 21 Commissioners.  Four Circuit Court Judges, One Chancery Court Judge, Two General Court Judges, and Two Juvenile Court Judges serve Montgomery and Robertson counties.  The county is located on the northwest border with Kentucky.  Nashville, Tennessee is directly southeast and Memphis, Tennessee is southwest of the county.  The county center is in Clarksville 3.2 miles South of the city center.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Kentucky and Robertson, Cheatham, Dickson, Houston, and Stewart counties. 

The area of the county is 544 square miles.  It is 29 out of 95 in the state.  It ranks 7 out of 95 in population in the state.  It has a density of 316.78 persons per square mile making it 9 out of 95 in the state.  Montgomery County has 77.1% of its population in its incorporated areas.  Interstate Highway 24 enters the county from the north, Kentucky, and exits to the southeast, Cheatham County.  United States Highway 41 clips the northeast from Kentucky, north, to Robertson County, east.  United States Highway 41 Alternate comes from Kentucky and terminates.  United States Highway 79 goes northeast, Kentucky, to southwest, Stewart County.  The county is a rectangle with the southeast corner missing.  Clarksville is located near the center of the county.  Clarksville is the county seat and, as the only incorporated city, it is the largest city.  It is 77.1% of the county population.  This county is in the Clarksville Metropolitan Statistical Area.
