The red brick Classical Revival structure was constructed in 1904.  The courthouse is on a square at Kingston, Main, Maiden, and Court streets.  United States Highway 27 is 4 blocks north.  W. Chamberlain and Company were the building architects.  The courthouse features a clock dome and the grounds have a gazebo.  The building was enlarged in 1959 and renovated in 1978.  The county was founded on October 21, 1817 from parts of Anderson and Roane counties as the 41st county.  Morgan County is named for American Revolutionary War hero Daniel Morgan.  The county seat is named for Wartburg, Germany.  Montgomery was the first county seat until 1870 when Wartburg became the seat. 

Morgan County government consists of a sheriff, a County Executive, and 18 Commissioners.  One Circuit Court Judge, One Chancery Court Judge, and One General Court Judge serve Morgan, Loudon, Meigs, and Roane counties.  Morgan County is in the northern part of the state.  Knoxville, Tennessee is east and Chattanooga, Tennessee is south of the county.  The county center is 2.6 miles Northwest of Wartburg.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Scott, Anderson, Roane, Cumberland, and Fentress counties. 

The area of the county is 522 square miles.  It is 33 out of 95 in the state.  It ranks 64 out of 95 in population in the state.  It has a density of 40.3 persons per square mile making it 79 out of 95 in the state.  Morgan County has 7.8% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 27 crosses the county from north to southeast from Scott County to Roane County.  The county could be described as a tower leaning northwest.  Wartburg is located in the southeast quarter of the county.  Wartburg is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 4.3% of the county population.
