The light tan brick Victorian structure was constructed in 1881 and remodeled in 1930 and renovated in 2007.  William G. Smith is the architect.  The courthouse is on a square on Main Street, 5th Avenue, AC Street, and 6th Avenue.  United States Highway 41 passes three blocks to the east of the site.  The courthouse features a tower and veterans’ memorials on the grounds.  A 1976 hospital was bought to provide an Administration Building in 1996.  The county was established on April 9, 1796 from Sumner County as the 14th county with Springfield as the only county seat.  The county is named for Tennessee Senator John Robertson.  Springfield is presumably named for Springfield, Massachusetts. 

Robertson County government consists of a sheriff, a County Mayor, and 24 Commissioners.  Four Circuit Court Judges, One Chancery Court Judge, One General Court Judge, and One Juvenile Court Judge serve Robertson and Montgomery counties.  The county is on the northern border with Kentucky.  Nashville, Tennessee is southwest and Knoxville, Tennessee is southeast of the county.  The county center is 2.4 miles Northeast of Springfield.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Kentucky and Sumner, Davidson, Cheatham, and Montgomery counties. 

The area of the county is 477 square miles.  It is 43 out of 95 in the state.  It ranks 19 out of 95 in population in the state.  It has a density of 152.6 persons per square mile making it 23 out of 95 in the state.  Robertson County has 59.7% of its population in its incorporated areas.  Interstate Highway 65 enters the county from the north, Kentucky, and exits to the southeast, Sumner County.  United States Highway 31 West parallels Interstate Highway 65 from Kentucky to Sumner County.  United States Highway 41 comes from the northwest, Montgomery County, and goes to the south, Davidson County.  United States Highway 431 passes north to south from Kentucky to Davidson County.  The county looks like a bowl.  Springfield is located slightly south of center in the county.  Springfield is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 25.8% of the county population.  This county is in the Nashville-Davidson-Murfreesboro-Franklin Metropolitan Statistical Area.
