The Modern red and tan brick Justice Center was constructed in 2008 on Scott High Drive at Old Brimstone Road.  United States Highway 27 passes three blocks west.  Southbuild, LLC provided the designs.  There were 1906 and 1947 facilities earlier in Huntsville, the only county seat.  The 1947 courthouse still operates at Court and Fir Hall streets as the Administrative Building.  Clem H. Meyer designed the courthouse.  The structure features a dome and clock tower with veterans’ memorials across the street.  The county was organized on January 1, 1849 from parts of Anderson, Campbell, Fentress, and Morgan counties as the 79th county.  Scott County is named for American Revolutionary War General Winfield Scott.  The county seat is named for a local settler named “Hunt.” 

Scott County government consists of a sheriff, a County Mayor, and 14 Commissioners.  One Circuit Court Judge, One Chancery Court Judge, and One General Court Judge serve Scott, Campbell, Claiborne, Fentress, and Union counties.  Scott County is on the northern border with Kentucky.  Chattanooga, Tennessee is south and Knoxville, Tennessee is southeast of the county.  The county center is 2.4 miles West of Huntsville.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Kentucky and Campbell, Anderson, Morgan, Fentress, and Pickett counties. 

The area of the county is 532 square miles.  It is 31 out of 95 in the state.  It ranks 63 out of 95 in population in the state.  It has a density of 41.1 persons per square mile making it 76 out of 95 in the state.  Scott County has 29.7% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 27 passes north to south through the county from Kentucky to Morgan County.  The county is shaped like a funnel.  Huntsville is located near the center of the county.  Oneida is in the northern third of the county.  Huntsville is the county seat and Oneida is the largest city.  Huntsville is 8.0% of the county population while Oneida is 17.3% of the county population.  The largest city is pronounced OE-NIE-DA.
