The classic Italianate courthouse was built in 1895 and remodeled in 1973.  It is on the square at Court Avenue, Bruce Street, Lera Court and Commerce Street.  United States Highway 411 is one block north of the courthouse.  The dark red brick building designer is Kenneth McDonald.  An Annex was added in 1990.  The courthouse features a working clock tower and corner domes.  Veterans’ memorials and a tribute to Dolly Parton are on the grounds.  Sevier County was formed on September 28, 1794 from Jefferson County as the 9th county with Sevierville as the only county seat.  The county and its county seat are named for Governor James Sevier.  

Sevier County government consists of a sheriff, a County Mayor, and 21 Commissioners.  Five Circuit Court Judges, One Chancery Court Judge, One General Court Judge, and One Juvenile Court Judge serve Sevier, Cocke, Grainger, and Jefferson counties.   Sevier County is on the eastern border with North Carolina.  Knoxville, Tennessee is west and Asheville, North Carolina is southeast of the county.  The county center is 5.1 miles Southeast of Sevierville nearer Cherokee Hills.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Jefferson and Cocke counties and North Carolina and Blount and Knox counties. 

The area of the county is 592 square miles.  It is 15 out of 95 in the state.  It ranks 16 out of 95 in population in the state.  It has a density of 166.2 persons per square mile making it 20 out of 95 in the state.  Sevier County has 28.8% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 321 crosses the county from east to west from Cocke County to Blount County.  United States Highway 411 enters from Jefferson County, northeast, and exits to Blount County, west.  United States Highway 441 comes from the northwest, Knox County, and goes to the southeast, North Carolina.  The county resembles the State of Georgia.  Sevierville is located in the northern third of the county.  Sevierville is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 18.2% of the county population.  The county is pronounced SE-VEER.  This county is in the Sevierville Micropolitan Statistical Area.
