The Modern glass and tan brick facility was erected in 1965 on Donelson Parkway at Spring Street.  Donelson Parkway is United States Highway 79.  Wilson and Odom provided the building designs.  The courthouse features a local mosaic, veterans’ memorials and a small liberty bell.  Stewart County was organized on October 25, 1803 from Montgomery County as the 25^th county.  The county is named for settler Duncan Stewart.  There was also an 1870 courthouse in Dover, the only county seat.  The county seat name comes from Dover, England and its white cliffs. 

Stewart County government consists of a sheriff, a County Mayor, and 14 Commissioners.  Two Circuit Court Judges, One Chancery Court Judge, One General Court Judge, and One Juvenile Court Judge serve Stewart, Cheatham, Dickson, Houston, and Humphreys counties.  The county is on the northwest border with Kentucky.  The Tennessee River forms its western border.  Nashville, Tennessee is southeast and Memphis, Tennessee is southwest of the county.  The county center is 4.8 miles East of Dover nearer Bear Spring.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Kentucky and Montgomery, Houston, Benton, and Henry counties. 

The area of the county is 458 square miles.  It is 47 out of 95 in the state.  It ranks 81 out of 95 in population in the state.  It has a density of 29.8 persons per square mile making it 92 out of 95 in the state.  Stewart County has 15.6% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 79 travels through the county from northeast, Montgomery County, to west, Henry County.  The county is a rectangle with a chimney added on the northwest corner.  Dover is located near the center of the county.  Dover is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 13.4% of the county population.  This county is in the Clarksville Metropolitan Statistical Area.
