The dark red brick Colonial Revival structure was erected in 1905.  It is on a square at Main, River, Foxall, and Court streets.  Tennessee State Highway 141 is Main Street in this part of town.  F. M. Winn provided the designs.  The building was enlarged in 1971.  The structure features a bell tower and Liberty Bell.  Veterans’ memorials are across the street.  Trousdale County was established on September 5, 1870 from parts of Wilson, Macon, Smith, and Sumner counties as the 89th county.  Hartsville has always been the county seat.  The county was named for Governor William Trousdale.  The county seat is named for settler James Hart. 

The area of the county is 114 square miles.  It is 95 out of 95 in the state.  It ranks 86 out of 95 in population in the state.  It has a density of 101.8 persons per square mile making it 34 out of 95 in the state.  Trousdale County has 100.0% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 231 cuts the southwest corner from north to south from Sumner County, west, to Wilson County, southwest.  The county is an overall diamond shape.  Hartsville is located in the western third of the county.  Hartsville is the county seat and the largest city since it is the only incorporated city.  Hartsville and Trousdale County are a single consolidated entity. 

Trousdale County government consists of a sheriff, a County Mayor, and 21 Commissioners.  Two Circuit Court Judges, One Chancery Court Judge, One General Court Judge, and One Juvenile Court Judge serve Trousdale, Jackson, Macon, Smith, and Wilson counties.  The county is in northern Tennessee.  Nashville, Tennessee is west and Chattanooga, Tennessee is southeast of the county.  The county center is in Hartsville .9 miles Northeast of the city center.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Macon, Smith, Wilson, and Sumner counties.  The county is pronounced TROOZ-DAEL.  This county is in the Nashville-Davidson-Murfreesboro-Franklin Metropolitan Statistical Area.
