The dark red brick Romanesque structure was built in 1897 and remodeled in 1954 and enlarged in 1978.  It is on Court Square between Morford and Main streets.  Main Street is United States Highway 70 South Business in this part of the town.  Reuben Harrison Hunt provided the designs.  A County Administration Building augments the courthouse since 1998.  The structure has a park setting in front and multiple towers.  Inside of the building are copies of many famous national documents (constitution, declaration, etc.)  The county was founded on December 7, 1807 from parts of White, Jackson, and Smith counties as the 35th county with McMinnville as the only county seat.  Warren County is named for American Revolutionary War General Joseph Warren.  The county seat is named for Legislator Joseph McMinn.  He is also the namesake for McMinn County. 

Warren County government consists of a sheriff, a County Executive, and 24 Commissioners.  One Circuit Court Judge and One General Court Judge serve Warren and Van Buren counties.  The county is in the central part of the state.  Nashville, Tennessee is northwest and Chattanooga, Tennessee is southeast of the county.  The county center is 2.9 miles Northwest of McMinnville.  The county is surrounded clockwise by De Kalb, White, Van Buren, Sequatchie, Grundy, Coffee, and Cannon counties. 

The area of the county is 434 square miles.  It is 54 out of 95 in the state.  It ranks 38 out of 95 in population in the state.  It has a density of 91.79 persons per square mile making it 35 out of 95 in the state.  Warren County has 36.8% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 70 South enters the county from the northeast, Van Buren County, and exits to the northwest, Cannon County.  The county is shaped like a pile of leaves tipped over to the west.  McMinnville is located near the center of the county.  McMinnville is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 34.2% of the county population.  This county is in the McMinnville Micropolitan Statistical Area.
