The red/brown brick Modern structure was built in 1966. There was an 1882 courthouse earlier in Lebanon, the only county seat. The courthouse is on Main, Cherry, Gay, and Stone streets. United States Highway 70 is Main Street in this part of the town. A Judicial Center was added in 2004. Morton-Carter & Associates provided the designs. The county was organized on October 26, 1799 from Sumner County as the 18th county. Wilson County is named for Legislator David Wilson. The county seat is named for the Biblical trees.

One Circuit Court Judge, One Chancery Court Judge, Two General Court Judges, and One Juvenile Court Judge serve Wilson, Jackson, Macon, Smith, and Trousdale counties and a court clerk serves Wilson County (judicial.) Wilson County is in the northern part of the state. Nashville, Tennessee is west and Chattanooga, Tennessee is southeast of the county. The county center is in Lebanon 2.4 miles South-Southwest of the city center. The county is surrounded clockwise by Trousdale, Smith, De Kalb, Cannon, Rutherford, Davidson, and Sumner counties.
The area of the county is 571 square miles. It is 19 out of 95 in the state. It ranks 10 out of 95 in population in the state. It has a density of 258.8 persons per square mile making it 13 out of 95 in the state. Wilson County has 53.7% of its population in its incorporated areas. Interstate Highway 40 crosses the county from east to west from Smith County to Davidson County. United States Highway 70 parallels Interstate Highway 40 from Smith to Davidson counties. United States Highway 70 North enters from Smith County, east, and terminates. United States Highway 231 passes north to south from Trousdale County to Rutherford County. The county is a funnel bending toward the southeast. Lebanon is located in the eastern third of the county. Mount Juliet is on the western border. Lebanon is the county seat and Mount Juliet is the largest city. Lebanon is 23.0% of the county population. Mount Juliet is 26.6% of the county population. This county is in the Nashville-Davidson-Murfreesboro-Franklin Metropolitan Statistical Area.
