The Modern courthouse was built in 1955 on the southwest corner of Third Street and Texas State Highway 94 (Frank Avenue).  This tan brick and limestone building is just two blocks from the center of Lufkin.  The architect was Wilbur Kent.  Marion (1846), Jonesville (1854), Homer (1858), and Lufkin (1892) have served as the seats of the county that was formed on April 22, 1846 from Nacogdoches County as the 64th county.  Lufkin also had three earlier courthouses.  Angelina County was named for a Native American girl from the region.  The county seat was named for E. P. Lufkin who was a local railroad engineer.  Angelina County is the birthplace of 1 Texas Governor, R. Allan Shivers. 

Angelina County government consists of a sheriff, a County Judge, and 4 Commissioners.  Two District Court Judges and Three County Court Judges serve Angelina County.  The county is located in the pine forests of east central Texas.  The county center is 8.1 miles Southeast of Lufkin nearer Homer.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Nacogdoches, San Augustine, Jasper, Tyler, Polk, Trinity, Houston, and Cherokee counties. 

The area of the county is 802 square miles.  It is 195 out of 254 in the state.  It ranks 46 out of 254 in population in the state.  It has a density of 107.7 persons per square mile making it 44 out of 254 in the state.  Angelina County has 54.1% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 59 comes into the county from Nacogdoches County on the north and goes into Polk County on the south.  United States Highway 69 enters from Cherokee County on the northwest and exits into Tyler County on the southeast.  The county is shaped like a “J” turned around with Lufkin slightly north of center.  Lufkin is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 39.5% of the county population.  The county is pronounced AN-GE-LEEN-A.  The county seat is pronounced LUF-KIN.  This county is in the Lufkin Micropolitan Statistical Area.
