The Classical Revival red brick 1917 courthouse is on the edge of the center of town on North Center Avenue and South Broadway.  United States Highway 377 passes to the west one block from the building.  The designer is Henry T. Phelps.  All four county courthouses, the previous being from 1884, have been located in Brownwood since the January 1, 1856 founding.  The county was carved from parts of Comanche and Travis counties as the 103rd county.  Brown County and Brownwood both get their names from Henry Stevenson Brown, an early Texas merchant and Native American fighter.  Brownsville, Cameron County, and Brownfield, Terry County, are named for other individuals. 

The area of the county is 957 square miles.  It is 97 out of 254 in the state.  It ranks 79 out of 254 in population in the state.  It has a density of 39.82 persons per square mile making it 87 out of 254 in the state.  Brown County has 63.1% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highways 67 and 377 enter from Comanche County on the west, split at Brownwood, and United States Highway 67 exits west into Coleman County.  United States Highways 84 and 183 come from the southeast, Mills County, split at Brownwood, and United States Highway 84 joins United States Highway 67 to go west into Coleman County.  At Brownwood, United States Highway 183 continues north into Eastland County.  At Brownwood, United States Highway 377 heads southwest into McCulloch County.  The county is shaped like a right-sided pentagon with nearly flat borders on the north, west, and south.  Brownwood is in the southern half of the county.  Brownwood is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 50.6% of the county population. 

Brown County government consists of a sheriff, a County Judge, and 4 Commissioners.  One District Court Judge serves Brown and Mills counties and Two County Court Judges serve Brown County.  Brown County is east of Abilene, Texas in north central Texas.  The county center is 5.1 miles Northeast of Brownwood nearer Early.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Eastland, Comanche, Mills, San Saba, McCulloch, Coleman, and Callahan counties.  This county is in the Brownwood Micropolitan Statistical Area.
