The green tiled dome and towers of the Oscar Ruffini designed limestone courthouse are truly unique among Texas courthouses.  Located on the edge of a park in downtown Ozona, Texas State Highway 163 passes on the other side of the park.  This Second Empire style structure was completed in 1902.  An Administration Building sits beside the courthouse.  Two courthouses have been in Ozona, the only ones for the county since the January 12, 1875 founding, the other one built in 1891.  The county was carved from Bexar County as the 167th county.  Crockett County is named for Davy Crockett, hero of the Alamo.  Crockett, the county seat of Houston County, is also named for the Texas legend.  Ozona’s name origin is commonly believed to have meant to bring settlers to the fresh air of the region.  Ozona is the only community in the county. 

The area of the county is 2807 square miles.  It is 8 out of 254 in the state.  It ranks 215 out of 254 in population in the state.  It has a density of 1.32 persons per square mile making it 239 out of 254 in the state.  Crockett County has 0.0% of its population in its incorporated areas since are no incorporated cities.  Interstate Highway 10 crosses east to west, Sutton County to Pecos County.  United States Highways 67/385 together cut the extreme northwest tip from Crane County into Pecos County.  United States Highway 190 also crosses east to west, Schleicher County to Pecos County.  The county is shaped like a fat backward C.  The western border is the Pecos River.  Ozona is in the far east part of the county.  Ozona is the county seat and the largest populated area.  It is 86.7% of the county population. 

Crockett County government consists of a sheriff, a County Judge, and 4 Commissioners.  One District Court Judge serves Crockett, Pecos, Reagan, Sutton, and Upton counties and One County Court Judge serves Crockett County.  Crockett County is southwest of San Angelo, Texas.  The county center is 13.4 miles Northwest of Ozona.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Reagan, Irion, Schleicher, Sutton, Val Verde, Terrell, Pecos, Crane, and Upton counties.  The county seat is pronounced O-ZONE-A.
