The stone Romanesque Revival courthouse was built in 1891 from the designs of Ben Davey and Bruno Schott.  It is located at 401 Main Street.  The county was originally formed on January 22, 1858 and included current day Real County.  Bullhead was the first county seat (1883), then Leakey (Real County) was the county seat until 1891 when Real County was separated out.  Edwards County was cut from Bexar County as the 129th county.  The building was restored in 1927 following a tornado and renovated in 2014.  The county got its name from Hayden Edwards, an early colonist of Texas.  Rocksprings is a geographical term for the springs that emerge from the rocks of Llano Canyon. 

Edwards County government consists of a sheriff, a County Judge, and 4 Commissioners.  One District Court Judge serves Edwards, Kinney, Terrell, and Val Verde counties and One County Court Judge serves Edwards County.  The county is situated center of Texas in the high Hill country northwest of San Antonio, Texas and south of San Angelo, Texas.  The Llano River and the Nueces River both have their origins in the county.  The county center is 18 miles Southwest of Rocksprings.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Kimble, Kerr, Real, Uvalde, Kinney, Val Verde, and Sutton. 

The area of the county is 2120 square miles.  It is 12 out of 254 in the state.  It ranks 236 out of 254 in population in the state.  It has a density of 0.94 persons per square mile making it 245 out of 254 in the state.  Edwards County has 59.0% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 83 touches the county in the extreme northwest from Kerr County.  United States Highway 277 crosses the northwest corner from Sutton County on the north into Val Verde County on the west.  United States Highway 377 diagonally cuts from Kimble County, north, into Val Verde County, west.  The county is a backward seven shape.  Rocksprings is north and east of county center.  Rocksprings is the county seat and, as the only incorporated city, it is the largest city.  It is 59.0% of the county population.
