The Modern courthouse of this county sits at the intersection of United States Highway 180 and Texas State Highway 70. The third courthouse for Fisher County since its organizing on August 21, 1876 was built in 1972. A 1965 Annex is attached. All three of these courthouses have been in Roby (the previous one dated 1910.) The single-story tan brick building, designed by Lovett and Sellar and Associates, cannot be missed in this small community near the center of the county. Fisher County was taken from Bexar County as the 188th county. Three forks of the Brazos River cross through or originated in Fisher County. The county is named for Samuel Rhoads Fisher, Secretary of Navy for the Republic of Texas. Roby was named for local landowners.

One District Court Judge serves Fisher, Mitchell, and Nolan counties and One County Court Judge serves Fisher County. This is another panhandle county northwest of Abilene, Texas and southeast of Lubbock, Texas. The county center is 3.2 miles North-Northwest of Roby. The county is surrounded clockwise by Stonewall, Jones, Taylor, Nolan, Mitchell, Scurry, and Kent counties.
The area of the county is 901 square miles. It is 147 out of 254 in the state. It ranks 209 out of 254 in population in the state. It has a density of 4.1 persons per square mile making it 205 out of 254 in the state. Fisher County has 52.4% of its population in its incorporated areas. United States Highway 83 cuts the extreme northeast corner from Stonewall County to Jones County. United States Highway 180 goes from Jones County, east, to Scurry County, west. Like most panhandle counties, Fisher is square in shape. The county seat is pronounced ROE-BEE. Roby is located near the center of the county. Rotan is in the northwest quarter of the county. Roby is the county seat and Rotan is the largest city. Roby is 16.1% of the county population while Rotan is 36.3% of the county population.
