The Modern courthouse at Floydada is located between Texas State Highway 207 and California Street on Main Street.  United States Highway 70 runs two blocks west.  Built in 1950 from designs of Marvin Stiles, the building is tan brick and steel.  Three courthouses (1892, 1911 & 1950) all in Floydada, have served the county.  Organized on August 21, 1876, Dolphin Ward Floyd is the namesake for the county.  He died at the Alamo.  Floyd County was originally part of Bexar County as the 189th county.  The county seat is a combination of Floyd and Ada Price, a local resident. 

Floyd County government consists of a sheriff, a County Judge, and 4 Commissioners.  One District Court Judge serves Floyd, Briscoe, Dickens, and Motley counties and One County Court Judge serves Floyd County.  The county is located in the panhandle northeast of Lubbock, Texas and southeast of Amarillo, Texas.  The county center is 8.6 miles North-Northeast of Floydada.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Briscoe, Motley, Dickens, Crosby, Lubbock, Hale, and Swisher counties. 

The area of the county is 992 square miles.  It is 76 out of 254 in the state.  It ranks 197 out of 254 in population in the state.  It has a density of 5.4 persons per square mile making it 198 out of 254 in the state.  Floyd County has 70.0% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 62 enters from Motley County on the east and exits to the south into Crosby County.  United States Highway 70 comes with United States Highway 62 from Motley County, splits at Floydada, and goes west into Hale County.  The county is square with Floydada in the southern half.  Floydada is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 49.6% of the county population.  The county seat is pronounced FLOYD-AE-DA.
