A dome sits on top of the tan brick Neo-Classical courthouse built in 1908.  It sits at the corner of Main and 4th streets.  Texas State Highway 6 passes in front while United States Highway 287 (Business) is seven blocks south of the facility.  The building was restored in 2014.  Three courthouses have been in Hardeman County, the first in Margaret (1885) and the last two in Quanah.  The county was founded on January 22, 1858 and named for Bailey Hardeman and Thomas Jones Hardeman.  These two brothers were Texas public servants.  The county was derived from Fannin County as the 131st county.  R. H. Stuckey was the designer the courthouse.  The structure was restored in 2014.  Quanah gets its name from Comanche chief, Quanah Parker. 

Hardeman County government consists of a sheriff, a County Judge, and 4 Commissioners.  One District Court Judge serves Hardeman, Foard, and Wilbarger counties and One County Court Judge serves Hardeman County.  The county is located south of the Red River and Oklahoma, to the west of Wichita Falls, Texas.  The county center is 11.4 miles Southeast of Quanah nearer Medicine Mound.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Oklahoma and Wilbarger, Foard, Cottle, and Childress counties.  The county has the Red River on its northern border and the Pease River on its southern border.  

The area of the county is 695 square miles.  It is 217 out of 254 in the state.  It ranks 210 out of 254 in population in the state.  It has a density of 5.1 persons per square mile making it 199 out of 254 in the state.  Hardeman County has 79.7% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 287 enters from the east, Wilbarger County, and exits to the west, Childress County.  It looks like a lazy L lying on its side.  Quanah is close to the county center.  Quanah is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 64.1% of the county population.  The county seat is pronounced KWA-NA.
