The concrete and stone Modern and Classical Revival courthouse of Hunt County was built in 1929 from the designs of Charles H. Page, Jr., & Brother and William R. Ragdale & Son.  It stands on the square between United States Highways (Business) 67 and 69, which are, Lee and Stonewall, respectively.  All six courthouses serving Hunt County since its March 1, 1846 inception have been in Greenville.  Hunt County was formed from Fannin and Nacogdoches counties as the 47^th county.  The county was named for Memucan Hunt, Republic of Texas Secretary of the Navy.  Huntsville, in Walker County, has a different source for its name.  Greenville got its name from General Thomas Green, a veteran of the Battle of San Jacinto and later Confederate general.  He also provided his name to Tom Green County. 

Hunt County government consists of a sheriff, a County Judge, and 4 Commissioners.  One District Court Judge serves Hunt and Rains counties and One District Court Judge and Three County Court Judges serve Hunt County.  The county is in the northeast part of the state to the northeast of Dallas, Texas.  The Sabine River begins in the southern part of the county.  The county center is in Greenville 3.2 miles Southeast of the city center.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Fannin, Delta, Hopkins, Rains, Van Zandt, Kaufman, Rockwall, and Collin counties. 

The area of the county is 882 square miles.  It is 183 out of 254 in the state.  It ranks 43 out of 254 in population in the state.  It has a density of 97.65 persons per square mile making it 44 out of 254 in the state.  Hunt County has 49.5% of its population in its incorporated areas.  Interstate Highway 20 goes east to southwest, Hopkins County to Rockwall County.  United States Highway 67 parallels Interstate Highway 20 from Hopkins County to Rockwall County.  United States Highway 69 transits northwest to southeast, Fannin County to Rains County.  United States Highway 380 originates in Hunt County and goes west into Collin County.  The county is a tall rectangular shape with Greenville located slightly west of center.  Greenville is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 29.7% of the county population.  This county is in the Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington Metropolitan Statistical Area.
