The second oldest courthouse in Texas, built in 1870, was replaced in 1999.  The new courthouse is located on Saunders Street (United States Highway 87) at San Antonio Avenue.  Interstate Highway 10 bypasses the city center to the west and the courthouse is four blocks north of the split of United States Highway 87 and Texas State Highway 46.  The designers of the limestone courthouse are Rehler, Vaughan & Koone, Inc.  Since the county was organized on January 1, 1862, the current courthouse is the second for the county.  Kendall County was carved from parts of Blanco and Kerr counties as the 154th county.  The county was named for George Wilkins Kendall, a member of the Santa Fe Expedition.  Boerne got its name from German poet and historian, Ludwig Boerne. 

Kendall County government consists of a sheriff, a County Judge, and 4 Commissioners.  One District Court Judge and Two County Court Judges serve Kendall County.  The county is in the hill country just north of San Antonio, Texas.  The Guadalupe River crosses the county from west to east.  The county center is 12.2 miles North of Boerne nearer Welfare.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Gillespie, Blanco, Comal, Bexar, Bandera, and Kerr counties. 

The area of the county is 662 square miles.  It is 223 out of 254 in the state.  It ranks 76 out of 254 in population in the state.  It has a density of 66.9 persons per square mile making it 64 out of 254 in the state.  Kendall County has 28.5% of its population in its incorporated areas.  Interstate Highway 10 comes from Bexar County to the south and goes to Kerr County to the northwest.  United States Highway 87 enters from the north, Gillespie County; goes into Kerr County and joins Interstate Highway 10; and jointly exits to the south, Bexar County.  Another of the funnel shaped counties has Boerne located at the extreme southern tip of the county.  Boerne is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 23.7% of the county population.  The county seat is pronounced BUR-NEE.  This county is in the San Antonio Metropolitan Statistical Area.
