The 1935 stone courthouse sits in the middle of this small community.  It is at the corner of Texas State Highway 6 and United States Highway 82.  Voelcker & Dixon provided the Modern design for this facility.  Three courthouses have served the county since the January 22, 1858 organization, all from Benjamin.  The county was carved from Fannin County as the 136th county.  Knox County is named for United States Secretary of War, General Henry Knox.  Benjamin got its name from local landowner Benjamin Bedford. 

The area of the county is 855 square miles.  It is 193 out of 254 in the state.  It ranks 216 out of 254 in population in the state.  It has a density of 4.35 persons per square mile making it 206 out of 254 in the state.  Knox County has 77.7% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 82 transits east, Baylor County, to west, King County.  United States Highway 277 cuts the southeast corner from Baylor County to Haskell County.  Benjamin is in the center of the county.  Munday is located near the southeast border of the county.  Benjamin is the county seat and Munday is the largest city.  Benjamin is 6.9% of the county population while Munday is 35.0% of the county population. 

Knox County government consists of a sheriff, a County Judge, and 4 Commissioners.  One District Court Judge serves Knox, Baylor, Cottle, and King counties and One County Court Judge serves Knox County.  Knox County is north of Abilene, Texas and southwest of Wichita Falls, Texas in north central Texas. The county is square except for the northeast corner, which is formed by the North Fork of the Wichita River.  The South Fork of the Wichita River and a fork of the Brazos River also cross the county.  The county center is 6.4 miles Northeast of Benjamin.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Foard, Baylor, Throckmorton, Haskell, Stonewall, and King counties.
