The Modern courthouse of Liberty County was built in 1931 on the square at Main and Sam Houston streets.  United States Highway 90 runs two blocks south of the location.  Cornell G. Curtis and A. E. Thomas designed the concrete and masonry structure.  An Annex was added in 1957.  Seven courthouses (1831, 1840, 1845, 1857, 1877, 1895, and 1931) have served the county since the January 8, 1836 founding, all of which have been located in Liberty.  The county was one of the original 23 counties in the state (10^th county.)  Original settlers named Liberty County and City for the concept of liberty.  The original name of the city was Villa de la Santisima Trinidad de la Libertad.  Liberty County is the birthplace of 1 Texas Governor, M. Price Daniel, Sr. 

Liberty County government consists of a sheriff, a County Judge, and 4 Commissioners.  One District Court Judge serves Liberty and Chambers counties and One District Court Judge and Two County Court Judges serve Liberty County.  The far southeast part of Texas is home to Liberty County.  Houston, Texas is southwest and Beaumont, Texas is east.  The Trinity River crosses through the county from north to south.  The county center is 20.3 miles North of Liberty nearer Dayton Lakes.  The county is surrounded by Polk, Hardin, Jefferson, Chambers, Harris, Montgomery, and San Jacinto counties. 

The area of the county is 1160 square miles.  It is 42 out of 254 in the state.  It ranks 44 out of 254 in population in the state.  It has a density of 79.0 persons per square mile making it 53 out of 254 in the state.  Liberty County has 32.4% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 59 cuts the northwest tip from San Jacinto County, north, to Montgomery County, northwest.  United States Highway 90 goes from Jefferson County, to the east, into Harris County, to the southwest.  A chair shaped county has Liberty in the south third.  Liberty is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 9.0% of the county population.  This county is in the Houston-Sugar Land-Baytown Metropolitan Statistical Area.
