A Classical Revival structure of West Texas, the courthouse was built in 1916 on the town square.  William R. Rice designed this red and brown brick courthouse located at First and Main streets.  United States Highway 380 passes to the north two blocks of the location.  The building is under renovation in 2019.  Tahoka has been the home of both courthouses the county has used since its August 21, 1876 organization.  The county was taken from Bexar County as the 206^th county.  Lynn County is named for Alamo victim G. William Lynn.  Tahoka got its name from a local lake.  Tahoka is Native American for “deep or clear lake.”  The Colorado River crosses the tip of the southwest corner of this county. 

Lynn County government consists of a sheriff, a County Judge, and 4 Commissioners.  One District Court Judge serves Lynn, Dawson, Gaines, and Garza counties and One County Court Judge serves Lynn County.  Lubbock, Texas is straight north of this panhandle county.  The county center is 1.3 miles South of Tahoka.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Lubbock, Crosby, Garza, Borden, Dawson, Terry, and Hockley counties. 

The area of the county is 893 square miles.  It is 176 out of 254 in the state.  It ranks 198 out of 254 in population in the state.  It has a density of 6.62 persons per square mile making it 189 out of 254 in the state.  Lynn County has 71.2% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 84 clips the northeast tip going from Lubbock County to Garza County.  United States Highway 87 goes north to south, Lubbock County to Dawson County.  United States Highway 380 crosses east to west from Garza County into Terry County.  The county is approximately square.  Tahoka is near the county’s center.  Tahoka is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 45.2% of the county population.
