The granite and red brick design and white columns of the 1909 courthouse stand out on the square of the City of Mason. The building is located on Spring Avenue at San Antonio. United States Highway 87 passes in front of the courthouse. Edward C. Hosford & Company designed this Classical Revival structure. The building burnt in February 2021. Since its founding on January 22, 1858, Mason has been the county seat. Three courthouses (1875, 1878, and 1909) have been in Mason. The county was taken from Gillespie and Bexar counties as the 138th county. Mason County and city were named for nearby Fort Mason. Mason County is the birthplace of 1 Texas Governor, Coke R. Stevenson.

It is in the north part of the Hill Country northwest of San Antonio, Texas. The county center is 1 mile South of Mason. The county is surrounded clockwise by McCulloch, San Saba, Llano, Gillespie, Kimble, and Menard counties.
The area of the county is 932 square miles. It is 97 out of 254 in the state. It ranks 208 out of 254 in population in the state. It has a density of 4.2 persons per square mile making it 204 out of 254 in the state. Mason County has 53.7% of its population in its incorporated areas. United States Highway 87 crosses from McCulloch County on the north into Gillespie County to the southeast. United States Highway 377 enters with United States Highway 87 from McCulloch County, splits at Mason, and exits to the southwest into Menard County. The county is square with the Llano River crossing the county from west to east. Mason is near the county’s center. Mason is the county seat and the largest city since it is the only incorporated city. It is 53.7% of the county population. Both the county and county seat are pronounced MAE-SON.
