The Classical Revival courthouse of McMullen County was built in 1930. It is at the corner of River (Texas State Highway 16) and Elm (Texas State Highway 72) streets in the tiny community of Tilden. William C. Stephenson provided the designs of this tan brick structure. The building was renovated in 1998. Two courthouses have served the county since its January 22, 1858 founding, both located in Tilden. The county was originally part of Atascosa, Bexar, and Live Oak counties and the 139th county. McMullen is named for John McMullen, one of the founders of San Patricio. Tilden’s namesake is Samuel J. Tilden, Democratic presidential candidate in 1876. Tilden had two previous names Dog Town and Colfax.
McMullen County government consists of a sheriff, a County Judge, and 4 Commissioners. Three District Court Judges serve McMullen, Aransas, Bee, Live Oak, and San Patricio counties and One County Court Judge serves McMullen County. The county is south of San Antonio, Texas with both the Frio and Nueces rivers crossing the county from west to east. The county center is 9.8 miles South of Tilden. The county is surrounded clockwise by Atascosa, Live Oak, Duval, Webb, La Salle, and Frio counties.
The area of the county is 1113 square miles. It is 48 out of 254 in the state. It ranks 251 out of 254 in population in the state. United States Highway 59 cuts the southeast tip from Live Oak County, east, to Duval County, south. The county is a tall rectangle shape. Tilden is in the north half of the county. Tilden is the county seat and the largest populated area. It is 31.7% of the county population.
