The Modern limestone courthouse of Montgomery County was built in 1936. After the county was organized on December 14, 1837, the city of Montgomery was the site of the first three courthouse and Conroe has been the site for the last two courthouses (1838, 1842, 1855, 1891, and 1936.) Montgomery County was taken from Washington County as the 28th county. The building sits south of Texas State Highway 105 (Davis Street) at Main Street. Interstate Highway 45 passes the center of the city to the west. The architect for the building was Joseph Finger, Inc. The building was remodeled in 1965 and an Annex was added in 1980. An Administration Building, built in 1991, augments the courthouse. Montgomery was named for American Revolutionary General Richard Montgomery. Conroe derives its name from Isaac Conroe, who operated a sawmill in the area.

The county is situated in the southeast part of the state just north of Houston, Texas. The county center is in Conroe 1.7 miles Northwest of the city center. The county is surrounded clockwise by Walker, San Jacinto, Liberty, Harris, Waller, and Grimes counties.
The area of the county is 1044 square miles. It is 66 out of 254 in the state. It ranks 11 out of 254 in population in the state. It has a density of 594.3 persons per square mile making it 12 out of 254 in the state. Montgomery County has 20.1% of its population in its incorporated areas. Interstate Highway 45 passes north to south from Walker County to Harris County. United States Highway 59 cuts across from Liberty County, east, into Harris County, south. The county is a lazy S on its side. Conroe is in the south and east part of the county. Conroe is the county seat and the largest city. It is 14.5% of the county population. The county seat is pronounced KON-ROE. This county is in the Houston-Sugar Land-Baytown Metropolitan Statistical Area.
