The Modern Spanish style of the 1958 courthouse makes it unique to Texas.  It is located at the intersection of United States Highway 59 and Texas State Highway 21.  J. N. McCammon designed this tan brick and concrete building.  The building was renovated in 2008 and an Annex was added in 2005.  Nacogdoches has had the only four county courthouses for since the county founding on December 22, 1836, the last built in 1911.  Nacogdoches has always been the county seat.  The county is one of the original 23 counties (21st county.)  The Nacogdoches Native Americans are the source for the county and city’s name. 

Nacogdoches County government consists of a sheriff, a County Judge, and 4 Commissioners.  Two District Court Judges and Two County Court Judges serve Nacogdoches County.  The county is the east Texas pine area with the Angelina River forming its western border.  The Attoyac Bayou is most of the east border.  Tyler, Texas is north and Houston, Texas is southwest of the county.  The county center is in Nacogdoches 2.6 miles North-Northeast of the city center.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Rusk, Shelby, San Augustine, Angelina, and Cherokee counties. 

The area of the county is 981 square miles.  It is 87 out of 254 in the state.  It ranks 54 out of 254 in population in the state.  It has a density of 65.77 persons per square mile making it 58 out of 254 in the state.  Nacogdoches County has 54.8% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 59 crosses diagonally from Shelby County in the northeast into Angelina County to the southwest.  United States Highway 259 enters from the north, Rusk County, and terminates in Nacogdoches County.  The county is a tall delta shape with a slight lean to the left.  Nacogdoches is slightly west of the county’s geographic center.  Nacogdoches is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 51.1% of the county population.  The county and county seat are pronounced NA-KOG-DOE-CHESS.  This county is in the Nacogdoches Micropolitan Statistical Area.
