The Classical Revival courthouse in Eldorado was built in 1924 and is at the intersection of United States Highways 190 and 277.  The architect was Henry T. Phelps for this tan stone building.  Since the April 1, 1887 county organization, Eldorado has been the site of both courthouses (1902 and 1924) for the county.  The county was taken from Crockett County as the 239th county.  Schleicher County was named for Gustav Schleicher, a colonist, military leader, and legislator.  Land promoters named the county seat.  It means “the Golden” in Spanish. 

Schleicher County government consists of a sheriff, a County Judge, and 4 Commissioners.  One District Court Judge serves Schleicher, Coke, Irion, Sterling, and Tom Green counties and One County Court Judge serves Schleicher County.  The county is southwest, south of San Angelo, Texas and northwest of San Antonio, Texas.  The San Saba River and the Concho River both originate in the county.  The county center is 6.6 miles Northeast of Eldorado.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Tom Green, Concho, Menard, Kimble, Sutton, Crockett, and Irion counties. 

The area of the county is 1311 square miles.  It is 31 out of 254 in the state.  It ranks 230 out of 254 in population in the state.  It has a density of 1.9 persons per square mile making it 229 out of 254 in the state.  Schleicher County has 64.4% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 190 crosses east to west from Menard County into Crockett County.  United States Highway 277 goes from north to south, Tom Green County to Sutton County.  The county is a rectangle with Eldorado slightly west of center in the county.  Eldorado is the county seat and the largest city since it is the only incorporated city.  It is 64.4% of the county population.  The county is pronounced SHLE-SHUR.  The county seat is pronounced L-DOE-RA-DOE.
