The 1972 granite remake of the 1911 brick Texas Renaissance courthouse has effectively eliminated the original design. It is sited is on the square at the intersection of 25th Street and College Avenue. United States Highway 180 is 25th Street and United States Highway 84 Business/Texas State Highway 350 is College Avenue through the city. The main United States Highway 84 bypasses the center of the city to the east. The original building’s designer was Otto Lang & Frank Witchell but the 1972 remake by Joseph D. Hinton gave the county a new structure. Snyder has been the only county seat housing both courthouses since the August 21, 1876 founding. Scurry County was formed from Bexar County as the 218th county. The county was named for Confederate General William R. Scurry. Snyder got its name from W. H. Snyder who was an original settler in the area.

The county is in the panhandle west of Abilene, Texas and southeast of Lubbock, Texas. The county center is in Snyder 1.8 miles South of the city center. The county is surrounded clockwise by Kent, Fisher, Nolan, Mitchell, Howard, Borden, and Garza counties.
The area of the county is 908 square miles. It is 149 out of 254 in the state. It ranks 133 out of 254 in population in the state. It has a density of 18.64 persons per square mile making it 139 out of 254 in the state. Scurry County has 66.2% of its population in its incorporated areas. United States Highway 84 goes on a diagonal from northwest to southeast, Garza County to Mitchell County. United States Highway 180 crosses east to west from Fisher County to Borden County. The Colorado River cuts the southwest corner of this square county. Snyder is located near the center. Snyder is the county seat and, as the only incorporated city, it is the largest city. It is 66.2% of the county population. The county is pronounced SKUR-REE. The county seat is pronounced SNIE-DUR. This county is in the Snyder Micropolitan Statistical Area.
