A Modern tan brick structure, built in 1983, is on the square at Broadway and 5th streets. The combined United States Highways 83 and 380 are Broadway north of the main part of the city. Rayner was the original county seat on August 21, 1876 with two courthouses being there, the first one was built in 1891. The seat moved to Aspermont in 1898 where the last three courthouses have been, the previous one dated 1911. Mills-Davis provided the courthouse designs. Stonewall County was cut from Bexar County as the 220th county. The county was named for Confederate General Thomas J. Stonewall Jackson. Aspermont is a geographical term meaning “rough hill” in Latin.
Stonewall County government consists of a sheriff, a County Judge, and 4 Commissioners. One District Court Judge serves Stonewall, Haskell, Kent, and Throckmorton counties and One County Court Judge serves Stonewall County. The county is in north central Texas northwest of Abilene, Texas, southwest of Wichita Falls, Texas, and southeast of Lubbock, Texas. Two forks of the Brazos River cross the county from west to east. The county center is 2.5 miles East of Aspermont. The county is surrounded clockwise by King, Knox, Haskell, Jones, Fisher, Kent, and Dickens counties.
The area of the county is 919 square miles. It is 113 out of 254 in the state. It ranks 243 out of 254 in population in the state. It has a density of 1.4 persons per square mile making it 238 out of 254 in the state. Stonewall County has 62.7% of its population in its incorporated areas. United States Highway 83 is a north-south highway from King County (north) to Fisher County (south). United States Highway 380 goes east to west from Haskell County to Kent County. Another square shaped county has Aspermont located a little south of center. Aspermont is the county seat and the largest city since it is the only incorporated city. It is 62.7% of the county population. The county seat is pronounced AS-PUR-MONT.
