The Texas Renaissance Far West Texas courthouse of Terry County was built in 1925 on the square at Main and 5th streets.  The tan brick and concrete facility got an Addition in 1951.  Peters & Haynes are the architects.  It was renovated in 2013.  Brownfield has been the site of both courthouses for the county since its August 21, 1876 organizing.  The county was cut from Bexar County as the 222nd county.  Terry is named for Benjamin Franklin Terry who was a leader in the Texas Rangers.  Brownfield gets its name from some local ranchers.  Brown County, Brownwood, and Brownsville all have different namesakes. 

Terry County government consists of a sheriff, a County Judge, and 4 Commissioners.  One District Court Judge serves Terry and Yoakum counties and One County Court Judge serves Terry County.  The county is located in the panhandle.  Lubbock, Texas is northeast and Odessa, Texas is south of the county.  The county center is 4.4 miles Southwest of Brownfield.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Hockley, Lubbock, Lynn, Dawson, Gaines, Yoakum, and Cochran counties. 

The area of the county is 890 square miles.  It is 165 out of 254 in the state.  It ranks 155 out of 254 in population in the state.  It has a density of 13.3 persons per square mile making it 156 out of 254 in the state.  Terry County has 82.6% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 62 crosses diagonally from Hockley County, northeast, into Gaines County, southwest.  United States Highway 82 enters jointly with United States Highway 62 from Hockley County on the north, splits in Brownfield, and exits into Yoakum County on the west.  United States Highway 380 goes east to west from Lynn County, joins United States Highway 82 in Brownfield, and exits into Yoakum County.  United States Highway 385 comes from Hockley County (north), joins United States Highway 62 in Brownfield, and exits into Gaines County (southwest.)  The county is square with the Colorado River flowing through it from northwest to southeast.  Brownfield is close to the county center.  Brownfield is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 75.5% of the county population.
