The green (now red) roofed, tan stone courthouse of Throckmorton County was built in 1890.  It is at the corner of Chestnut and United States Highway 183 is this small city.  The architect of the Italianate courthouse was Martin, Byrnes, and Johnston.  An Annex was built in 1938 and the courthouse was restored in 2015.  Williamsburg had the other courthouse for the county from its January 22, 1858 organization.  Throckmorton became the county seat in 1890.  Fannin and Bosque counties gave up territory to form Throckmorton County as the 145th county.  Throckmorton County and City were named for Dr. William Edward Throckmorton, the father of Governor James W. Throckmorton. 

Throckmorton County government consists of a sheriff, a County Judge, and 4 Commissioners.  One District Court Judge serves Throckmorton, Haskell, Kent, and Stonewall counties and One County Court Judge serves Throckmorton County.  The county is located in north central Texas northeast of Abilene, Texas and southwest of Wichita Falls, Texas.  Two forks of the Brazos River cross the county.  The county center is 4.3 miles West-Southwest of Throckmorton.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Baylor, Archer, Young, Stephens, Shackelford, Haskell, and Knox counties. 

The area of the county is 912 square miles.  It is 125 out of 254 in the state.  It ranks 238 out of 254 in population in the state.  It has a density of 1.6 persons per square mile making it 232 out of 254 in the state.  Throckmorton County has 65.5% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 183 enters from Baylor County on the north and exits into Stephens County on the southeast.  United States Highway 283 comes joined with United States Highway 183 from Baylor County, splits in the county, and goes into Shackelford County (southwest.)  United States Highway 380 crosses east to west from Young County into Haskell County.  The county is square with Throckmorton near center in the county.  Throckmorton is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 50.2% of the county population.  The county and county seat are pronounced THROCK-MORE-TON.
