There are many angles on the Art Deco limestone structure built in 1930.  It is situated on a square at 11th and Guadalupe.  The location is ten blocks west of Interstate Highway 35 coming through the city.  The building’s designer was Page Brothers.  The building was enlarged in 1959 and 1962.  A Justice Complex was added in 2001 and an Administration Building also augments the courthouse.  Austin has been the only county seat for all three courthouses since the January 1, 1840 organizing of the county.  Travis County was cut from Bastrop County as the 32nd county.  The county was named for the commander at the Alamo, William Barrett Travis.  Austin got its name from Stephen F. Austin, colonizer and President of the Republic of Texas.  Austin County is also named for him. 

Travis County government consists of a sheriff, a County Judge, and 4 Commissioners.  Eighteen District Court Judges and Eleven County Court Judges serve Travis County.  The county is on the edge of the hill country between San Antonio, Texas, southwest, and Waco, Texas, northeast.  The Colorado River crosses through the county.  The county center is in Austin .1 miles North of the city center.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Williamson, Bastrop, Caldwell, Hays, Blanco, and Burnet counties. 

The area of the county is 989 square miles.  It is 79 out of 254 in the state.  It ranks 5 out of 254 in population in the state.  It has a density of 1304.6 persons per square mile making it 5 out of 254 in the state.  Travis County has 81.6% of its population in its incorporated areas.  Interstate Highway 35 goes from Williamson County on the north into Hays County on the south.  United States Highway 183 enters from Williamson County and exits south into Caldwell County.  United States Highway 290 comes from Bastrop County, east, and goes to Hays County, west.  The Texas state capitol is located in this county.  The county is a basic diamond shape with an indent on the northern border.  Austin city limits sprawl north and south through the county and extend its Hays and Williamson counties.  The center of Austin is southeast of the county center.  Austin is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 74.6% of the county population.  This county is in the Austin-Round Rock Metropolitan Statistical Area.
