The 1914 red brick courthouse of Trinity County sits on the square at the 1st and McGee streets.  First Street is United States Highway 287 passing through this small city.  The building was renovated in 2011.  The county was organized on January 1, 1850 as the 88th county.  Sumpter was the county first seat with two courthouses (1850 and 1857.)  Pennington assumed the seat in 1874 and Groveton in 1884, with the last two courthouses (1884 and 1914.)  Trinity County was cut out of Houston County.  L. S. Green designed the current Classical Revival courthouse.  Trinity is named for the river.  Groveton gets its name from the forests predominant in the county. 

Trinity County government consists of a sheriff, a County Judge, and 4 Commissioners.  Two District Court Judges serve Trinity, Polk, and San Jacinto counties and One County Court Judge serves Trinity County.  The county is located in southeast Texas on the edge of the East Texas pines.  The Neches River is its northeast border and the Trinity River is its southwest border.  Houston, Texas is southwest and Beaumont, Texas is southeast of the county.  The county center is 3.8 miles Southwest of Groveton.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Houston, Angelina, Polk, San Jacinto, and Walker counties.   

The area of the county is 693 square miles.  It is 218 out of 254 in the state.  It ranks 145 out of 254 in population in the state.  It has a density of 19.6 persons per square mile making it 132 out of 254 in the state.  Trinity County has 24.0% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 287 comes from the northwest, Houston County, and goes to the southeast, Polk County.  The county is a long skinny rectangle turned to a 45-degree angle.  Groveton is close to the county center.  Trinity is located near the southwest border of the county.  Groveton is the county seat and Trinity is the largest city.  Groveton is 6.7% of the county population while Trinity is 17.3% of the county population.  The county is pronounced TRIN-I-TEE.
