The Tyler County Italianate and Classical Revival courthouse was built in 1891 but went through a major remodel in the 1937.  An Addition was added at that time.  It is located on the square at Bluff and Magnolia streets.  Bluff is United States Highway 190 and Magnolia is United States Highways 69 and 287 coming through the center of the city.  The architect of the original structure was T. S. Hodges.  Woodville has been the home of all three courthouses for the county since its March 1, 1846 founding.  The county was originally part of Liberty County and the 54th county.  Tyler County was named for President John Tyler.  He provided the name for Smith County seat, Tyler as well.  The county seat was named for the second governor of Texas, George T. Wood.  Wood County is also named for him. 

Tyler County government consists of a sheriff, a County Judge, and 4 Commissioners.  One District Court Judge serves Tyler, Jasper, and Newton counties, One District Court Judge serves Tyler and Hardin counties, and One County Court Judge serves Tyler County.  The county is located in the southeast part of the state, northeast of Houston, Texas and north of Beaumont, Texas.  The Neches River provides the north and the east border of the county.  The county center is 8.1 miles Southeast of Woodville.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Angelina, Jasper, Hardin, and Polk counties. 

The area of the county is 923 square miles.  It is 109 out of 254 in the state.  It ranks 122 out of 254 in population in the state.  It has a density of 21.5 persons per square mile making it 126 out of 254 in the state.  Tyler County has 23.0% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 69 is a north-south crossing road from Angelina County into Hardin County.  United States Highway 190 goes east to west from Jasper County into Polk County.  United States Highway 287 enters from Polk County (northwest), joins United States Highway 69, and exits into Hardin County.  The county is mainly rectangular tilted to the west.  Woodville is slightly west of center in the county.  Woodville is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 12.2% of the county population.
