The stately columns of the tan brick and limestone 1927 Texas Renaissance and Classical Revival courthouse stand out in the city of Uvalde.  It is located on the square at North and East streets.  United States Highways 83 and 90 intersect at the location.  Henry T. Phelps designed this facility.  All three courthouses since the January 1, 1850 county organization have been in the city of Uvalde, the previous one was built in 1890.  The county was taken from Bexar County as the 89th county.  Uvalde County and City are named for Spanish governor and soldier, Juan de Ugalde.  The name changed over the years to its present spelling.  Uvalde County is the birthplace of 1 Texas Governor, Dolph Briscoe, Jr. 

The area of the county is 1559 square miles.  It is 19 out of 254 in the state.  It ranks 97 out of 254 in population in the state.  It has a density of 16.94 persons per square mile making it 142 out of 254 in the state.  Uvalde County has 66.1% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 83 crosses north to south, Real County to Zavala County.  United States Highway 90 goes east to west from Medina County into Kinney County.  The county is shaped like a rectangle.  Uvalde city is in the southern quarter of the county.  Uvalde is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 59.7% of the county population. 

Uvalde County government consists of a sheriff, a County Judge, and 4 Commissioners.  One District Court Judge serves Uvalde, Medina, and Real counties and One County Court Judge serves Uvalde County.  Uvalde County is west of San Antonio, Texas in south Texas.  Both the Nueces River and the Frio River cross the county from north to south.  The county center is 7.9 miles North of Uvalde.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Real, Bandera, Medina, Frio, Zavala, Maverick, Val Verde, and Edwards counties.  This county is in the Uvalde Micropolitan Statistical Area.
