The Modern brown brick courthouse was built in the 1981.  It is located on King Street between Saint Asaph and Pitt streets.  United States Highway 1 passes five blocks to the west of the location.  Saunders, Cheng & Appleton are the architects.  There was an 1872 earlier courthouse combined with the city hall.  The city was organized on January 1, 1870 for Prince William County as the 101st county equivalent.  The independent city is named for the family of city founder, Phillip Alexander. 

Alexandria City government consists of a sheriff, a Mayor, and 6 Council Members.  Three Circuit Court Judges and Four District Court Judges serve Alexandria City and Fifty-nine Magistrate Court Judges serve Alexandria City and Arlington, Fairfax, and Prince William counties and Fairfax, Falls Church, Manassas, and Manassas Park cities.  The city is on the northeast border with both Maryland and the District of Columbia.  The Potomac River forms its eastern border.  Baltimore, Maryland is northeast and Richmond, Virginia is south of the city.  The city center is in Alexandria 2.8 miles West-Northwest of downtown.  The city is surrounded clockwise by Arlington County and the District of Columbia and Maryland and Fairfax County. 

The area of the city is 15 square miles.  It is 111 out of 133 in the state.  It ranks 12 out of 133 in population in the state.  It has a density of 9331.07 persons per square mile making it 1 out of 133 in the state.  Alexandria has 100.0% of its population in its incorporated city limits.  Interstate Highway 95 enters the city from the east, Maryland, and exits to the west, Fairfax County.  Interstate Highway 395 comes from the northwest, Arlington County, and goes to the southwest, Fairfax County.  United States Highway 1 crosses from Arlington County to Fairfax County, north to south.  The city resembles a fat capital letter L lying on its back.  This city is in the Washington-Arlington-Alexandria Metropolitan Statistical Area.
