A Modern red brick 2004 courthouse replaced a classic 1892 red brick building which stands next to the new structure.  There was an 1864 facility earlier.  The structure is on Court Street at Morton Lane.  The courthouse is two blocks southwest of United States Highway 460 Business.  Craddock Cunningham Architectural Partners provided the designs.  The courthouse features columns with veteran memorials on the grounds.  Many of the Virginia counties have their county seat at a location named after the county followed by the words Court House.  Some counties maintain this in their official name.  Appomattox County was formed on January 1, 1845 from parts of Buckingham, Prince Edward, Campbell, and Charlotte counties as the 92nd county.  Clover Hill was the county seat until 1892 when Appomattox assumed the role.  The county and its county seat are named for the Appomattox River which is named for a Native American tribe. 

Appomattox County government consists of a sheriff and 5 Supervisors.  Two Circuit Court Judges and Six District Court Judges serve Appomattox, Buckingham, Charlotte, Cumberland, Halifax, Lunenburg, Mecklenburg, and Prince Edward counties and Fifty-nine Magistrate Court Judges serve Appomattox, Amelia, Brunswick, Buckingham, Charlotte, Chesterfield, Cumberland, Dinwiddie, Greensville, Halifax, Lunenburg, Mecklenburg, Nottoway, Powhatan, Prince Edward, Prince George, Surry, and Sussex counties and Colonial Heights, Emporia, Hopewell, and Petersburg cities.  The county is in the south-central part of the state.  Richmond, Virginia is east and Roanoke, Virginia is west of the county.  The county center is 5.6 miles Northeast of Appomattox.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Buckingham, Prince Edward, Charlotte, Campbell, Amherst, and Nelson counties. 

The area of the county is 334 square miles.  It is 59 out of 133 in the state.  It ranks 91 out of 133 in population in the state.  It has a density of 48.3 persons per square mile making it 102 out of 133 in the state.  Appomattox County has 12.6% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 60 clips the northern tip of the county from Buckingham County, northeast, to Nelson County, north.  United States Highway 460 goes east to west from Prince Edward County to Campbell County.  The county is an overall diamond shape.  Appomattox is located slightly south and west of center in the county.  Appomattox is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 11.9% of the county population.  The county and county seat are pronounced AP-POE-MAT-TOKS.  This county is in the Lynchburg Metropolitan Statistical Area.
