The Modern concrete building was erected in 1994.  The courthouse is on Courthouse Road between 14th and 15th streets.  United States Highway 50 passes three blocks south of the facility.  Hanson Lind Meyer Design provided the building designs.  There were 1889 and 1960 courthouses previously.  Many of the Virginia counties have their county seat at a location named after the county followed by the words Court House.  Some counties maintain this in their official name.  The county was organized on February 27, 1801 from Fairfax County as the 76th county.  The county and its county seat are named for the estate of its founder. 

Arlington County government consists of a sheriff and 5 Board Members.  Three Circuit Court Judges and Seventeen District Court Judges serve Arlington County and Fifty-nine Magistrate Court Judges serve Arlington, Fairfax, and Prince William counties and Alexandria, Fairfax, Falls Church, Manassas, and Manassas Park cities.  Arlington County is in the northeast part of Virginia.  Maryland is across the Potomac River as is the District of Columbia.  Baltimore, Maryland is northeast and Richmond, Virginia is south of the county.  The county center is in Arlington .7 miles East-Northeast of the city center.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Maryland and the District of Columbia and the City of Alexandria and Fairfax County. 

The area of the county is 26 square miles.  It is 106 out of 133 in the state.  It ranks 8 out of 133 in population in the state.  It has a density of 9178.6 persons per square mile making it 2 out of 133 in the state.  Arlington County has 0.0% of its population in its incorporated areas.  Interstate Highway 66 originates and heads west into Fairfax County.  Interstate Highway 395 comes from the District of Washington, east, and goes into the City of Alexandria, southeast.  United States Highway 1 enters from the District of Columbia and heads south into the City of Alexandria.  United States Highway 29 comes from the east, District of Columbia, and goes to the west, Fairfax County.  United States Highway 50 parallels Interstate Highway 66 from District of Columbia to Fairfax County.  The county resembles a key pointing southeast.  Arlington County functions like an independent city.  This county is in the Washington-Arlington-Alexandria Metropolitan Statistical Area.
