The Modern red brick facility was constructed in 1998. The building is on Hicks Street at Main Street. Main Street is United States Highway 58 Business. Browne, Eichman, Dalgliesh, Gilpin and Paxton are the architects. The courthouse features columns and a tower. Veteran memorials are on the grounds. There were 1746 and 1854 courthouses before. Cochran (1721), Freeman (1746), and Lawrenceville (1781) have all served as the county seat. The county was created on January 1, 1720 from Prince George County as the 22nd county. It is named for the Duchy of Brunswick-Lunenburg, Germany. It is the same source name as for Lunenburg County. Lawrenceville is named for Captain James Lawrence. Brunswick County is the birthplace to 1 Virginia Governor, Albertis S. Harrison, Jr.

The county is on the southern border with North Carolina. Richmond, Virginia is north and Virginia Beach, Virginia is northeast of the county. The county center is in Lawrenceville .2 miles Northwest of the city center. The county is surrounded clockwise by Dinwiddie and Greensville counties and North Carolina and Mecklenburg, Lunenburg, and Nottoway counties.
