The Modern red brick structure was constructed in 1991.  The courthouse is on Village Highway at Courthouse Lane.  Village Highway is United States Highway 501.  Craddock Cunningham Architectural Partners provided the designs.  The building was enlarged in 2009.  Veteran memorials are on the grounds.  There was an 1849 courthouse before in Rustburg the only county seat.  Campbell County was created from Bedford County on January 1, 1782 as the 63rd county.  It was named for American Revolutionary General William Campbell.  The county seat is named for founder Jeremiah Rust.  Campbell County is the birthplace to 1 Virginia Governor, Andrew J. Montague. 

Campbell County government consists of a sheriff and 7 Supervisors.  Five Circuit Court Judges and Eight District Court Judges serve Campbell, Amherst, Bedford, and Nelson counties and Lynchburg City and Fifty-nine Magistrate Court Judges serve Campbell, Alleghany, Amherst, Augusta, Bath, Bedford, Botetourt, Craig, Franklin, Henry, Highland, Nelson, Patrick, Pittsylvania, Roanoke, and Rockbridge counties and Buena Vista, Covington, Danville, Lexington, Lynchburg, Martinsville, Roanoke, Salem, Staunton, and Waynesboro cities.  The county is situated in south central Virginia.  Roanoke, Virginia is west and Richmond, Virginia is east of the county.  The county center is 4.7 miles South of Rustburg.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Amherst, Appomattox, Charlotte, Halifax, Pittsylvania, and Bedford counties and the City of Lynchburg. 

The area of the county is 504 square miles.  It is 23 out of 133 in the state.  It ranks 32 out of 133 in population in the state.  It has a density of 110.5 persons per square mile making it 64 out of 133 in the state.  Campbell County has 8.0% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 29 crosses through the county from north to south from the City of Lynchburg to Pittsylvania County.  United States Highway 460 enters from Appomattox County, east, and exits into the City of Lynchburg, west.  United States Highway 501 comes from the City of Lynchburg and heads southeast into Halifax County.  The county looks like a fat goblet tipping toward the west.  Rustburg is located near the center of the county.  Altavista is on the southwest border of the county.  Rustburg is the county seat and Altavista is the largest city.  Rustburg is 2.9% of the county population although it is unincorporated.  Altavista is 6.1% of the county population.  This county is in the Lynchburg Metropolitan Statistical Area.
