The Modern red brick building was erected in 2005. The courthouse is located on Courthouse Road at Courthouse Green. Virginia State Highway 5 passes one block to the north. Wiley & Wilson and Moseley Architects combined on the building designs. The structure features columns. There was a 1740 courthouse before. The county is in the eastern part of Virginia. Richmond, Virginia is directly to the west and Virginia Beach, Virginia is southeast of the county. The James River forms its southern border. The county center is 4.7 miles Northwest of Charles City nearer Barnetts. The county is surrounded clockwise by New Kent, James City, Surry, and Prince George counties and the City of Hopewell and Chesterfield and Henrico counties.
