The Modern red brick building was erected in 2005.  The courthouse is located on Courthouse Road at Courthouse Green.  Virginia State Highway 5 passes one block to the north.  Wiley & Wilson and Moseley Architects combined on the building designs.  The structure features columns.  There was a 1740 courthouse before.  Many of the Virginia counties have their county seat at a location named after the county followed by the words Court House.  Some counties maintain this in their official name.  Charles City County was an original county (2nd county) founded on January 1, 1634.  City Point (1634), Westover Plantation (1639), and Charles City (1730) have all served as the county seat.  The county and county seat are named for Prince Charles, son of King James.  Charles City County is the birthplace to 3 Virginia Governors, Benjamin Harrison V, John Tyler, Jr., and John M. Gregory. 

Charles City County government consists of a sheriff and 3 Supervisors.  Four Circuit Court Judges and Six District Court Judges serve Charles City, Gloucester, James City, King and Queen, King William, Mathews, Middlesex, New Kent, and York counties and Poquoson and Williamsburg cities and Sixty-two Magistrate Court Judges serve Charles City, Caroline, Essex, Gloucester, Hanover, Henrico, James City, King and Queen, King George, King William, Lancaster, Mathews, Middlesex, New Kent, Northumberland, Richmond, Spotsylvania, Stafford, Westmoreland, and York counties and Fredericksburg, Poquoson, Richmond, and Williamsburg cities.  The county is in the eastern part of Virginia.  Richmond, Virginia is directly to the west and Virginia Beach, Virginia is southeast of the county.  The James River forms its southern border.  The county center is 4.7 miles Northwest of Charles City nearer Barnetts.  The county is surrounded clockwise by New Kent, James City, Surry, and Prince George counties and the City of Hopewell and Chesterfield and Henrico counties. 

The area of the county is 204 square miles.  It is 93 out of 133 in the state.  It ranks 121 out of 133 in population in the state.  It has a density of 35.57 persons per square mile making it 114 out of 133 in the state.  Charles City County has 0.0% of its population in its incorporated areas since it does not have any incorporated cities.  There are no Interstates or United States Highways in the county.  William Henry Harrison, the 9th President, was born in this county.  John Tyler, the 10th President, was born and is buried in this county.  The county looks like a caterpillar.  Charles City is located near the southern border of the county.  Charles City is the county seat and the largest populated area.  It is 1.8% of the county population.  This county is in the Richmond Metropolitan Statistical Area.
