A Modern red brick courthouse was built at the corner of High and 7th streets.  High Street is United States Highway 250 Business.  The year the courthouse was built and the architect are unknown.  The city was created on January 1, 1762 from Albemarle County as the 49th county equivalent.  Charlottesville is named for Queen Sophia Charlotte.  She is also the namesake for Charlotte County and its county seat, the county seat of Albemarle County, and Mecklenburg County.  Charlottesville City is the birthplace to 1 Virginia Governor, J. Lindsay Almond, Jr. 

Charlottesville City government consists of a sheriff, a Mayor, and 6 Council Members.  Three Circuit Court Judges and Nine District Court Judges serve Charlottesville City and Albemarle, Culpeper, Fluvanna, Goochland, Greene, Louisa, Madison, and Orange counties and Forty-two Magistrate Court Judges serve Charlottesville City and Albemarle, Clarke, Culpeper, Fauquier, Fluvanna, Frederick, Goochland, Greene, Loudoun, Louisa, Madison, Orange, Page, Rappahannock, Rockingham, Shenandoah, and Warren counties and Harrisonburg and Winchester cities.  The city is in the central part of Virginia.  Richmond, Virginia is southeast and Alexandria, Virginia is northeast of the city.  The city center is 1.1 miles Northwest of downtown.  The city is completely surrounded by Albemarle County. 

The area of the city is 10 square miles.  It is 118 out of 133 in the state.  It ranks 39 out of 133 in population in the state.  It has a density of 4347.50 persons per square mile making it 5 out of 133 in the state.  Charlottesville has 100.0% of its population in its incorporated city limits.  Interstate Highway 64 passes east to west through the city in from and back into Albemarle County.  United States Highway 29 goes north to south out of and into Albemarle County.  United States Highway 250 parallels Interstate Highway 64 in and out of Albemarle County.  The county resembles a popped kernel of corn.  This city is in the Charlottesville Metropolitan Statistical Area.
