The Modern red brick building was erected in 1990 and enlarged in 2003.  The courthouse is located on Courthouse Road at Iron Bridge Road.  Iron Bridge Road is Virginia State Highway 10.  A 2001 Juvenile and Domestic Courthouse and 1980 County Administration Building augment the county courthouse.  The Moseley Group are the designers.  The building features columns in a complex of many governmental structures.  There were 1749 and 1917 versions previously.  Many of the Virginia counties have their county seat at a location named after the county followed by the words Court House.  Some counties maintain this in their official name.  The county was organized on May 25, 1749 from Henrico County as the 36th county.  Chesterfield Court House (1749), Manchester (1870), and Chesterfield (1876) have all served as the county seat.  The county and its county seat are named for the Earl of Chesterfield.  Chesterfield County is the birthplace to 1 Virginia Governor, Wyndham Robertson. 

Chesterfield County government consists of a sheriff and 5 Supervisors.  Four Circuit Court Judges and Nine District Court Judges serve Chesterfield County and Colonial Heights City and Forty-nine Magistrate Court Judges serve Chesterfield, Amelia, Appomattox, Brunswick, Buckingham, Charlotte, Cumberland, Dinwiddie, Greensville, Halifax, Lunenburg, Mecklenburg, Nottoway, Powhatan, Prince Edward, Prince George, Surry, and Sussex counties and Colonial Heights, Emporia, Hopewell, and Petersburg cities.  The county is in the eastern part of the state.  Richmond, Virginia is directly north and Roanoke, Virginia is west of the county.  The county center is 5.5 miles West-Northwest of Chesterfield.  The county is surrounded clockwise by the City of Richmond and Henrico and Charles City counties and the City of Hopewell and Prince George County and Colonial Heights and Petersburg cities and Dinwiddie, Amelia, and Powhatan counties. 

The area of the county is 426 square miles.  It is 41 out of 133 in the state.  It ranks 5 out of 133 in population in the state.  It has a density of 855.7 persons per square mile making it 37 out of 133 in the state.  Chesterfield County has 0.0% of its population in its incorporated areas since there are no incorporated cities.  Interstate Highway 95 crosses north to south in the county from the City of Richmond to the City of Colonial Heights.  Interstate Highway 295 comes from Henrico County, north, and goes to the City of Hopewell, southeast.  United States Highways 1/301 parallel Interstate Highway 95 from Richmond to Colonial Heights cities.  United States Highway 60 comes from the City of Richmond and goes to Powhatan County, northwest.  United States Highway 360 comes from the City of Richmond and goes southwest into Amelia County.  The county is shaped like a wooden shoe.  Chesterfield is located in the eastern third of the county.  Chester is in the southeast quarter of the county.  Chesterfield is the county seat and Chester is the largest populated area.  Chesterfield is 1.7% of the county population while Chester is 6.4% of the county population.  This county is in the Richmond Metropolitan Statistical Area.
