The year for the construction of the red brick structure is unknown as is the architect.  The courthouse is located on Locust Street between Court and Monroe avenues.  United States Highway 60 is one block northeast.  The city was created on January 1, 1952 from Alleghany County as the 119th county equivalent.  The judicial functions are handled at the Alleghany County Courthouse.  Covington is named for settler Peter Covington.  He is also the namesake for the county seat of Alleghany County. 

Covington City government consists of a Police Chief, a Mayor, and 4 Council Members.  Three Circuit Court Judges and Eight District Court Judges serve Covington City and Alleghany, Augusta, Bath, Botetourt, Craig, Highland, and Rockbridge counties and Buena Vista, Lexington, Staunton, and Waynesboro cities and Fifty-nine Magistrate Court Judges serve Covington City and Alleghany, Amherst, Augusta, Bath, Bedford, Botetourt, Campbell, Craig, Franklin, Henry, Highland, Nelson, Patrick, Pittsylvania, Roanoke, and Rockbridge counties and Buena Vista, Danville, Lexington, Lynchburg, Martinsville, Roanoke, Salem, Staunton, and Waynesboro cities.  The city is in the western part of the state.  Roanoke, Virginia is south and Richmond, Virginia is east of the city.  The city center is in Covington 1.1 miles Southeast of downtown.  The city is completely surrounded by Alleghany County. 

The area of the city is 6 square miles.  It is 129 out of 133 in the state.  It ranks 128 out of 133 in population in the state.  It has a density of 993.50 persons per square mile making it 33 out of 133 in the state.  Covington has 100.0% of its population in its incorporated city limits.  Interstate Highway 64 goes east to west in from and out to Alleghany County.  United States Highway 60 parallels Interstate Highway 64 in and out of Alleghany County.  United States Highway 220 comes from the north, Alleghany County, and joins United States Highway 60 to the east, Alleghany County.  The city resembles a tear drop.
