The red brick Modern courthouse was built in 1976. The courthouse is on Patton and Lynn streets. Virginia State Highway 293 is one block to the west. William W. Moseley provided the courthouse designs. The building was enlarged in 1999. It features columns and a tower. There were 1873 and 1927 courthouses previously. The City of Danville was organized on February 17, 1830 from Pittsylvania County as the 81st county equivalent. It is named for the Dan River.

Four Circuit Court Judges and Six District Court Judges serve Danville City and Franklin and Pittsylvania counties and Fifty-nine Magistrate Court Judges serve Danville City and Franklin, Alleghany, Amherst, Augusta, Bath, Bedford, Botetourt, Campbell, Craig, Henry, Highland, Nelson, Patrick, Pittsylvania, Roanoke, and Rockbridge counties and Buena Vista, Covington, Lexington, Lynchburg, Martinsville, Roanoke, Salem, Staunton, and Waynesboro cities. The city is on the southern border with North Carolina. Roanoke, Virginia is northwest and Richmond, Virginia is northeast of the city. The city center is in Danville .8 miles West-Northwest of downtown. The city is surrounded clockwise by Pittsylvania County and North Carolina.
The area of the city is 43 square miles. It is 103 out of 133 in the state. It ranks 42 out of 133 in population in the state. It has a density of 990.5 persons per square mile making it 35 out of 133 in the state. Danville has 100.0% of its population in its incorporated city limits. United States Highway 29 enters the city from the north, Pittsylvania County, and exits to the south, North Carolina. United States Highway 58 comes in from the east and goes to the west in and out of Pittsylvania County. United States Highway 360 is joined with United States Highway 58 from the east, Pittsylvania County, and terminates. The city is shaped like a sprig of broccoli. This city is in the Danville Metropolitan Statistical Area.
