The white brick Beaux Arts courthouse is shared with Greensville County and built in 1831. The facility is at Main and Spring streets. United States Highway 301 is Main Street in the town. Daniel Lynch provided the building designs. The building was enlarged in 1907 and 1934. It was renovated in 1961 and 1997. The City of Emporia was created on January 1, 1967 from Greensville County as the 128th county equivalent. Its red brick City Hall contains the Mayor and Council chambers. It is named for Emporia, Kansas. It is also the source for the county seat of Greensville County. Emporia City is the birthplace to 1 Virginia Governor, John N. Dalton.

The city is located in southern Virginia. Richmond, Virginia is north and Virginia Beach, Virginia is east of the city. The city center is in Emporia 1.2 miles North-Northeast of downtown. The city is completely surrounded by Greensville County.
