The construction year for the Greek Revival red brick building is unknown.  It is located on Armstrong Street at University Drive.  Virginia State Highway 123 is one block to the west of the site.  The architect is unknown.  The city was founded on January 1, 1961 from Fairfax County as the 124th county equivalent.  The City of Fairfax is named for Lord Fairfax of Cameron.  He is also the namesake of Fairfax County and its county seat. 

Fairfax City government consists of a Police Chief, a Mayor, and 6 Council Members.  Fourteen Circuit Court Judges and Eighteen District Court Judges serve Fairfax City and Fairfax County and Falls Church City and Fifty-nine Magistrate Court Judges serve Fairfax City and Arlington, Fairfax, and Prince William counties and Alexandria, Falls Church, Manassas, and Manassas Park cities.  The city is in the northeast part of Virginia.  Alexandria, Virginia is east and Richmond, Virginia is south of the city.  The city center is in Fairfax .8 miles Northeast of downtown.  The city is completely surrounded by Fairfax County. 

The area of the city is 6 square miles.  It is 130 out of 133 in the state.  It ranks 76 out of 133 in population in the state.  It has a density of 3760.83 persons per square mile making it 7 out of 133 in the state.  Fairfax has 100.0% of its population in its incorporated city limits.  Interstate Highway 66 clips the northern part of the city from and to Fairfax County.  United States Highways 29/50 cross east to west in and out of Fairfax County.  The city is shaped like the State of Washington tipping toward the east.  This city is in the Washington-Arlington-Alexandria Metropolitan Statistical Area.
