The Modern Williamsburg style courthouse was built in 1959.  It is sited on Park Avenue at Little Falls Street.  United States Highway 29 passes two blocks southeast of the facility.  Milton L. Grigg designed the tan brick structure.  The building was enlarged in 1983.  The city was established on January 1, 1948 from Fairfax County as the 117th county equivalent.  It is named for the church which was established here. 

Falls Church County government consists of a sheriff, a Mayor, and 6 Council Members.  Fourteen Circuit Court Judges and Eighteen District Court Judges serve Falls Church City and Fairfax County and Fairfax City and Fifty-nine Magistrate Court Judges serve Falls Church City and Arlington, Fairfax, and Prince William counties and Alexandria, Fairfax, Manassas, and Manassas Park cities.  The city is in northeast Virginia.  Alexandria, Virginia is southeast and Richmond, Virginia is south of the city.  The city center is in Falls Church .3 miles Northeast of downtown.  The city is surrounded clockwise by Fairfax and Arlington counties. 

The area of the city is 2.1 square miles.  It is 133 out of 133 in the state.  It ranks 101 out of 133 in population in the state.  It has a density of 6980.0 persons per square mile making it 3 out of 133 in the state.  Falls Church has 100.0% of its population in its incorporated city limits.  United States Highway 29 enters the city from Arlington County, east, and exits into Fairfax County, west.  United States Highway 50 comes in from and goes back into Fairfax County on the southeast and southwest.  The city is shaped like an ice pick.  This city is in the Washington-Arlington-Alexandria Metropolitan Statistical Area.
